Congratulations to Hilton Smith on a long running career. Hilton, now 84, has decided to retire to his regular walking, dancing, and generally keeping fit. Many of you know Hilton as a regular on the running circuit and perennial winner of the 80+ age category. A highlight of his career is that Hilton did his first marathon at age 75, when a lot of us will be long past any consideration of such things. He had a very distinguished career as a boxer in his youth, and has always been fit. Hilton is certainly an inspiration to me, and I wish him well in his running retirement. Don't worry, you'll still see Hilton as he plans to volunteer at the races as much as possible. He speaks very highly of the running community here in Cape Breton and wants to remain a part of it. For a great article on his retirement, (written by my cousin, I'll just mention!) CLICK HERE

Hey all - it's short notice, but we'll start up Tuesday Track tomorrow, April 21st at 6:30 (note not 6:45) PM - see you all at Atlantic St. Track. Remember to stay for swimming afterwards if you can (8PM at Kiwanis Pool) 11 weeks or so until the Ingonish Triathlon!! Plus it's time to start tuning up for run race season which is hard upon us. Interval training is the best way to ramp up your VO2 max, increase your race speed, and it's also #1 for health benefits. You can do it alone, but you won't do it nearly as well as you will with the group. Remember that these sessions are for IMproving your fitness, not proving your fitness. So there's no such thing as "waiting to get in shape" before starting. Hope to see you there! Rain or shine! LETR Cape Breton Region – Our annual Torch Run is quickly approaching so wipe the dust off of those old running shoes and warm up that community spirit. On Thursday May 14, 2015 we will be leaving C-200 at 6:00pm for a light 5km run through the downtown area while sharing the torch with our very own Special Olympics Athletes.
-Why do we do it? Other than being awesome – LETR is a fundraising event unique to law enforcement with all proceeds going directly to the Cape Breton Special Olympics, so they can continue to be special and put smiles on hundreds of athletes from our community. Funds go towards programming, equipment and sponsor athletes to go to provincial and national games. -When is it ?
