On September 19, 2021, the spirit of Terry Fox was splashed all over the CBRM. The weather didn’t deter walkers and runners throughout Sydney, North Sydney and beyond as they flew the colours for Terry Fox. Notice our great shirts! All through the day, the organizers heard from Terry Foxers who were raising money for innovative cancer research in their own way. A few Terry Fox Run regulars showed up at the Civic Centre in the afternoon and did the usual 5k Terry Fox Run route and the Northsiders took to the streets of North Sydney to help raise money for cancer research. It felt great to once again be a part of what Terry Fox has inspired. The story of Terry Fox tugs at our heartstrings because we know his dedication to the run completely eclipsed his concern for himself. The whole world is in awe of a person so young who was courageous enough to think he could make the world a better place. And that is why we show up - even virtually - every year, and give what we can to the Terry Fox Foundation. So! On Sunday, September 18, 2022, please come out and run, walk or bike with us to honour Terry Fox and his dream. We are making a difference. Just look at what one person can do! And it’s not too late to donate! terryfox.ca/terryfoxrun/sydney (Contributed by Karen Campbell)

October 23rd, 2021 will mark the inaugural Point Edward Half Marathon in Cape Breton.
This Half Marathon starts at the Sydney - Riverview Y Service Club of Cape Breton and will go along Westmount road, Edwardsville, Point Edward and finishes up at Breton Brewing. There are a few spots open for registration: https://raceroster.com/events/2021/50975/point-edward-half-marathon Contact Herbie at (902)217-2028 or hsakalauskas@gmail.com if you have any questions. This is a belated post to congratulate the Barbarians own Allan MacKenzie, who was winner of the recently presented the Sport Nova Scotia senior male athlete of the year for triathlon for NS for his great performance in 2018. Allan had a great year, and won pretty much every race he entered. His usual MO was to pace well - let the others go too hard off the start and pass them on the bike or run.
Congrats to Allan! Great to see this award come back to Cape Breton. We are proud of you! Thanks very much to Andreas Burger and Sarah Penney, who despite now being busy working parents were kind enough to organize and host the Baddeck Duathlon again this year.
Held out on the rear Baddeck loop, this is a great natural venue for a du. The run is out-and-back on a dirt road, almost entirely uphill out, down back. The 23Km bike loop is hilly and very challenging. This year 27 participants completed the race. First male was Ryan MacDonald (believe it or not with that name - not from Cape Breton!). First female was Baddeck's own Caden MacLeod who is looking fast again this year. Rhonda Power and Debbie Howie were the top team. Thanks again to our hosts, and well done all! 3/2/2019 Louisbourg Slush Run kicks off the year Mar 2, with Long-John Jaunt to follow on Mar 9thRead NowFrom the same folks who bring you the Louisbourg Run Through Time, the Slush Run has now been a fixture of the CBRR schedule for over 30 years.
This year great weather blessed the runners, and brought out a good crowd of nearly 50 including a number of walkers. It had been a long time since our last race, as early winter and weather gods who seemed intent on making racing impossible had conspired to cancel the Pursuit Run and James Delorey. Congrats to everyone who ran, and to top 3 men Justine Lalanne, Corey Deveaux, and Allan MacKenzie, and top 3 women Rebecca MacNeil, Erin Forsey, and Laura Doucette. A big thanks to Cindy and Calvin and all the great folks who have made the small community of Louisbourg a hub of running here in NS. Thinking of the run through time, this year is the 25th anniversary. The course has been changed to start and end in the fortress. There is a party with a great band planned for after the race. It's going to sell out so register early!!! The Long John Jaunt, brought to you by Cyril MacDonald and his crew, is next week at the Boularderie School on Ross Ferry Road. There is a15K option as well as the half marathon (21.1K). Hope to see you there! Hi folks I don't know if anyone noticed, but it's been a tough 2 months of winter already, and it's not even mid-January. Daniel Murray has been skiing for months already and is like a pig in... snow. North Mountain is closed. And our races keep getting cancelled. So, since we haven't had a chance to do this in person, I'm sending along a 2018 CBRR wrapup message by the interwebs. Let me start by thanking our awesome volunteers that help keep the CBRR "running" (pun definitely intended). Bernadette MacLellan, Karen Campbell, and Lee Ann Astephen have kept the kids race series going for several years now, and we've watched some fantastic runners like Rachyl MacPhail, Caden MacLeod, and now Ella Bottomley transition from being "really fast for a kid" to being "really fast", winning our races, and winning the points series outright. After many years of shouldering this load, Bernadette, Karen, and Lee Ann are ready to ride off into the sunset and thus we are looking for some new volunteer blood to keep this series going. Get in touch if you can help out! Allan MacKenzie has shouldered the huge job of putting together a schedule and making it all fit. (Can you say "herding cats"?) Thanks as well to Anne Doyle who has been secretary for the last few years Dean Abbass who has been treasurer for many years Linda Miles who has taken over the job of ordering that swanky CBRR-logoed gear that many of you are now sporting Corey Deveaux who has taken over the points series and has a great plan to make it better - more competitive and fair - in 2019. And a big congratulations to several runners who had great 2018 seasons. Justin Lalanne was once again our points series winner. He was dedicated to both training and racing, and won over a big range of distances from one mile on up to half marathon. (He didn't win in the marathon though, as Corey Deveaux had a huge race at the Fiddler's to finish ahead of him). A shout-out as well to Tyler Germani, who has just gotten a little serious about running again in the last couple of years and is starting to show how big an aerobic capacity he has. On the female side, Caden MacLeod is our 2018 points series winner after an impressive season. Again, Caden was incredible across a range of distances, was a fixture at our races, and judging by her Strava feed was very dedicated to her training. Slightly younger, but just as impressive, is Ella Bottomley who didn't race enough events to qualify for the points series but was very dominant when she did race. Both Ella and Caden had impressive finishes at provincial X-country this year. We are proud of them!! There were lots of great age group performances this year, but I'll try to keep things brief. Eli Brooks comes from a very fit family and despite his young age won the 19 and under category. And he is only getting faster! Cyril MacDonald has gone from being a jogger to being a runner, and won 20-29. For the females, Nicole Kennedy (now Lalanne after an all-CBRR wedding) came out on top. Wow - that baby is going to be fast! In 30-39, Laura Doucette had a great year to beat some stiff competition (and is going to be an awesome triathlete - you should see her swim). For the men, Jason McGuigan has been very impressive and has moved up to the top of the age group. Renee MacDonald has been a very solid runner and beat the sister act of Glenda Bowles and Wavey Burke who rounded out the top 3 in that group. 50-59 was no surprise on the men's side. Dean Abbass has some kind of a freaky anti-aging gene and as far as I can tell hasn't really slowed down in about 15 years. Allison Hodder (whose running gait is remarkably the same as her daughter Yvonne Jessome - check it out sometime) topped the women's side. 60-69 has become a more and more competitive group. At one point we only had one or two finishers, so just completing the series assured you of a top-3 finish. Not anymore! For the men, Ron Walsh finished ahead of George Jessen and Martin Guest, and Linda Miles (the one who provided Laura Doucette with her genetic running talent) prevented a Walsh dynasty by beating out Trish, with CBRR secretary Anne Doyle coming in 3rd. 70-79 men also had multiple finishers, with Archie McDonald topping Colin Waye and Ron Neville. Godfather Peter Hanna is running a little less because of some health issues (but we're hoping for a comeback in 2019). And George Bennett has continued to be solid running through 2018, with no retirement plans. It was also a stressful and difficult year for some of us. We had a near loss at the Fiddler's Run, but I'm happy to say Tom is doing well now. We hope to see him back in circulation this year. Condolences to Anne Doyle and her family, as daughter Tricia lost her husband to cancer this year. Back to more positive happenings, we were very excited to have the new Tri-the-Mira triathlon at the Mira Boat Club this July. The race will be back for 2019 , minus the Olympic Distance, but we're expecting it to sell out so do register early when it goes live. We have lots of beginner swimmers in the pool this winter trying to translate their land-mammal fitness into sea-mammal sleekness. As I write this I am about to head out to a CBRR meeting to finalize more details of the 2019 season. Of note, watch for: -a new relay-format race in Glace Bay to coincide with Bay Days -the return of a mother's day run -the Ross Ferry Thanksgiving run as a points series event (no summer event there this year) -the new early-March date for the Long John Jaunt, and a 15K distance available for those of you looking to make a step up above 10K Thanks to our sponsors! Races aren't free to put on, and our fees don't cover everything. Thanks so much to folks like Gary Lewis at Breton Tire, CBRM Rec, the County of Victoria, Bounty Bay Shellfish in Englishtown, and the many other sponsor's I'm forgetting and/or don't have room to mention. And a special thanks to Steve and Kathy Van Nostrand at Keltic Group (the former Bel-Mac) for all their support over the years, and specifically this year for the discount they give on gift certificates that we use for our end-of-year points-series awards. Which reminds me. If you won your age group I have a 50$ Keltic Group Gift Certificate for you. For Caden and Justin, I have an even better gift certificate for you. And for your running scrapbook, I have a certificate for all those who finished top 3 in their age group. I'll bring everything to Breton Brewing this Friday for after the run, so you can pick it up from 6:45-8 or so. Or get in touch with me directly to make arrangements. Lastly, thanks to all of you for running volunteering, cheering, supporting a family member, babysitting kids so your spouse can race, and in general for being fun, motivated people who make the CBRR a great group to hang with. Don't forget running doesn't stop in the winter! Hope to see you for Tuesday Tempo at Kiwanis at 6:50, as well as Steve MacNeil's Friday Breton Brewing beer run. (Don't forget to tease him about his ugly mug!) And don't forget to sign up for CBRR for 2019!!! Peace all... Kelly's Klimb has been an annual event for over 10 years. Come and test your early season fitness by riding from the bottom to the top of the mountain. Meet at 12:30 at Lobster Galley Restaurant at St. Ann's Bay.
Because of rain and cool weather forecast for tomorrow, the Klimb is moved to the rain date on Sunday. Weather permitting, the group will ride into Baddeck together after the Klimb and have coffee and a bite at High Wheeler. Hope to see you there for a great event with lots of history here in CB. Many apologies for being pokey, but the 2018 CBRR schedule is now DONE! Thanks to all you race directors, and especially to Allan MacKenzie who has organized the schedule the last few years, and to Herbie Sakalauskas, graphic designer extraordinaire who puts it together and makes it look great. A sincere thanks to both of them for what is a lot of work.
The schedule is available HERE. Hope to see you all at this Saturday's Long John Jaunt (if you haven't signed up, you can do it HERE.) Congratulations once again to Peter Poulos who is absolutely tearing it up this year in the pool. At last Saturday’s long-course meet in Halifax, Peter swam 4 events and set 4 more provincial age group records. Not bad eh? He had already had a very successful meet in Antigonish in February where he swam 4 events and set 4 age group records. Peter downplayed this explaining that 3 of the 4 were in the same events he already set the short-course records for. In my books it’s still pretty frickin’ amazing. Congrats Peter! (long-course times are a little slower than short course because you don’t get the benefit of a push off the wall every 25m)
The results are at: http://swimnovascotia.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/halt-masters-meet-results-march-2018-v3.pdf 400m free 5:29 200 breast 3:12 100 breast 1:25 50 breast 37s As well, don’t forget that this Sunday’s swim is 10-12AM instead of 8-10. Don’t forget the time springs forward Saturday when you go to bed, so it’s only an hour extra sleep and not 2. Great to see the continued good turnouts and lots of folks working towards Tri-the-Mira this July. Peace all CM |
