Hi Athletes
I hope you met your goals in 2014, and hope that you set - and achieve - some fitness goals for 2015. There are a few exciting things coming up!! I apologize for being tardy getting these out to you. (which reminds me - if anyone is moderately tech and net-savvy and wants to help keep the site updated, please let me know!) Thanks to Debbie Howie for spearheading the idea of "Active100" Did you know that physical inactivity is responsible for more premature deaths than smoking, diabetes, and obesity COMBINED! So get active - and get your family and friends active too! Did you know that being physically active reduces the odds of developing, or if you have it already, helps to control things like weight probelms, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, high cholesterol, and arthritis? Not that any of us Cape Bretoners have any of these, eh?? This is a GREAT opportunity to throw your hat into the ring and commit to 100 days of physical activity (which will get you through the winter - a common time to sit around and gain weight, which statistically speaking you will never lose all of). And it'll be FUN! with lots of people doing it together. How about a few suggestions to get you started: 1) New Year's Day Fun Run, thanks to Karen Campbell. See previous post 2) Join the CBRR - link at right. 3) Sign up for the 2015 Long John Jaunt 1/2 Marathon (Feb 28th). Make the commitment! Link at right. 4) 100Runs100Days For those traditionalists amongst you, you can still do the 100Runs 100Days challenge (which would also qualify you for the Active100). Information is here: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=5368385 5) Join the Crawling Crustacea Master's swim team. If you are considering a summer triathlon, or just want to add swimming to your athletic resume, this is the time of year to get going. We will be offering a beginner's program again. Details TBA but let me know if you are interested. Hope you had a great Christmas and all the best for a happy and healthy 2015!!! CM Chris Milburn CB Roadrunners From Debbie Howie: ACTIVE 100 DAYS --this is opened to all people--please share the post. Since the numbers were down last year for the 100 runs 100 days, we're going to mix it up this year. A new challenge called, ACTIVE 100 DAYS. Instead of just running, you can mix it up with various activities--it's just cross training. As for the die hard runners, you can still run the 100 days. Mission Statement To inspire people to become more physically active To introduce new activities To encourage camaraderie among sports--camaraderie and wellness go hand-in-hand. Rules Start date will be January 1, 2015 You must enter your activities into the database (link to follow) You must be active a minimum of 30 consecutive minutes for the activity to count You can double up on a day to use another day, for when life gets in the way ( sick or extenuating circumstances ) To double up an activity to be used on another day, you must do 30 minutes of activity and have a least a 60 minute break, before the next 30 minutes of activity. Examples of activities: Running, Cycling, Swimming, Walking, Yoga, Hockey, Cross Fit, Skiing, Hiking, Snowshoeing and many many more. We want to know what you do, to inspire yourself through the Canadian Winter. This is a great opportunity for members to introduce their activity to the group and for others to try a new activity. If a member of the group, has access to a number of snowshoes, we could have a beginner/share day for snowshoeing. Also, if somebody had access to a spin classroom, we could have a beginner/share day. Maybe an introduction to Cross Fit--the ideas are endless. It may be an opportunity to try a new activity without the pressure of the experienced classroom.

Start the new year in healthy style by coming out on January 1st for the annual Resolution Run - 2015 edition! It's set for 1:00pm at the Mira Road Fire Hall at 1757 George Street (new location). All levels of runner are welcome; new runners especially are encouraged to take part! Routes and distances are still to be announced, but since the goal is participation, nobody is going to yell at you if you're slow or need to take walk breaks :-) Plus, there's no charge! What could be better? Stay afterward for Auld Lang Syne and coffee. (Big thanks to the tireless Karen Campbell for getting this organized! ) This Saturday AM is a very special event.
Peter Hanna and Archie McDonald have been running Kelly's Mountain every month for 5 years. Rain or shine, snow or hail, they have been there. Now THAT is commitment. Through the years they have been joined by a lot of friends. Come on out this Saturday and join them. All speeds are welcome. If you can, come for breakfast with the group afterwards. Run starts 9AM, just on the other side of the Seal Island Bridge, park on the left near the gravel pit and campground. Hope to see you there! It is 7Km up Kelly's. Not steep, but a steady climb that will challenge you! This is not a race, but a great chance to get a good workout in, and brag to your friends Monday that you ran up Kelly's. Thanks to RD (Race Director) Nick Burke for putting on another very successful James Delorey Memorial 5K. This run marks the first points-series run of the 2015 series for the CB Roadrunners. A particular congratulations to Corey Deveaux and Stephanie Myles, who as co-winners of the race, have earned the title of "Cape Breton's Fittest Couple". Congrats to both!
You can find a link to results here on the cbtrisports website. Thanks to Nick for this write-up: The 5th Annual James Delorey 5k Run/ Walk took place on December 6th at Whitney Pier Memorial Junior High School. A total of 110 participants braved the cold conditions to support the event. With it being the 5th year of the event, organizers looked to grow the event by adding a kid’s run and involving James’ elementary school, Harbourside. All money from this year’s event will be donated to the Nova Scotia SPCA Cape Breton Branch in memory of Chance, who passed away in January. All money will stay in Cape Breton This years event also saw the introduction of chip timing, which was provided by Jeris Abbass. The overall male and female plaque in memory of late Police Chief, Myles Burke, was presented to Corey Deveaux and Stephanie Myles by Myles’ daughter, Janine and Police Chief, Peter McIsaac (who also ran). Stephanie crossed the finish line in a time of 20:57, while Corey came in at 17:26. Close behind Corey was Daniel Murray in a time of 17:47. The second female to cross the line was Chrissy Smith, with a time of 23:15. Not far behind Smith was Beth Cholock in a time of 23:46. Third male was Andreas Burger at 17:53. A reception followed the race; MP Mark Eyking spoke to the participants of his personal connection to the event. Chief Peter McIsaac spoke to those in attendance and officially announced the proclamation of James Delorey Day on 7 December. James’ mother, Veronica thanked everyone for coming out and keeping James’ name alive. While monies are still coming in, a final total will be announced and a cheque presented to the SPCA before the holidays by Race Directors Nick Burke and Andrew Petrie, along with Veronica Fraser. Thanks to each and every person who came out to support this great event and we look forward to seeing everyone for the 6th Annual James Delorey Run on 5 December, 2015. |
