Hi Crusties
As per previous years PLEASE EMAIL ME TO CONFIRM IF YOU ARE JOINING THIS YEAR We’re into the shortest half of the year, outdoor swimming is all but over, and it’s time to put on your bathing suit, suck in your gut, and hop back in the pool with the Crusties. Sorry about the last-minute notice. I had some issues getting lifeguards confirmed. FYI there is a new keypad on the door to the athletic centre at the CGC. I’m not sure how that’s going to work for us yet (waiting to year) so for now if you show up and it’s locked, head right down to the main CGC entrance and let security know where you are going. As you may already know, the Kiwanis is closed (bummer!) for another 3 weeks because of more renovations (yay!). They are scheduled to reopen around the third week of October. So for the first few weeks we’ll be at the Coast Guard College pool. So to start, the schedule will be: Monday 7:30-9PM Wed 7:30-9PM Thurs 7:30-9PM Sat 8-10AM We have confirmed guards/instructors for the first week, and I’m working to confirm beyond that. There are a number of recently-graduated beginner swimmers who are starting this year, so the idea is that we’ll have one lane as the “newbie lane”, which will be low-pressure, high-instruction-level. Not an actual beginner program but newbie-friendly. Costs will remain nearly the same as last year, with a slight decrease for new members: (CGC Dolphin Cadets swim for free) -returning members $230 for the year (Sept-June) if paid in total. If paid separately, $100 for Sept-Dec and $150 for Jan-June -new members $260 for the year if paid in total, if paid separately 120$ and 175$ The fee works out to about 7$ per week if you do the math, so even if you make one swim per week it’s not a bad price. Once you join, you can attend any or all of our swims. Julie and I put the money through our own account rather than pay fees on a Crustacea account, so please write any cheques to us personally. If you pay cash, it helps me if you bring it in an envelope with your name on it. For anyone who hasn’t been on a master’s swim team in the past, here are a few FAQ’s. DO I HAVE TO BE “A MASTER”. No. “Master” means old. It doesn’t mean fast. We have all levels of swimmer and you will fit somewhere DO I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SWIM. To fit in the newbie lane you should be able to swim one length of the pool without stopping. WHY NOT JUST SWIM ON MY OWN Swimming with a group is a lot more fun. Coaches give you feedback on your stroke. You’ll push yourself more and learn a lot of new things. It’s night and day. A few other notes and reminders: -remember there is no more cbcrustacea.ca but rather everything will be posted at cbtrisports.com/swimming -IF YOU ARE NEW TO MASTER’S SWIMMING please go to the website and read “Bighead’s lane etiquette primer” -we will indeed have a beginners program again. It will start once Kiwanis opens, likely late October. Details TBA. -remember that notices go out via the CB Barbarians FB page and by @cbtrisports twitter. Things like late-breaking pool cancellations and time changes. So sign up or keep your eye on these through the year My last little sales pitch: Swimming is a great way to complement cycling, running, or walking, which are all lower body sports. It’s non-impact and a great way to stay in aerobic shape during those downtimes for other sports. Because pool swimming is a winter sport it’s great to keep you motivated and on track through the dark months of the year. So join up, and bring a friend or unsuspecting spouse. Hope to see you soon in the pool. Looking forward to a great year! Peace all BH

Peter Hanna has been doing marathons for a few years now. Turning 75 hasn't slowed him down much, as evidenced by his impressive finish in 4hrs 26min in this year's CB Fiddler's Run.
This year's Fiddler's was a roaring success. With a change of date, and a return to the old course around the harbour, there was a great surge in entries, with over 900 people participating, and over 100 in the marathon. Thanks to Nick Burke and all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this a huge success! Thanks to James Forsey for the great photo. The marathon winners were both doctors this year. Dr. Kate MacInnes is set to be Cape Breton's new hematologist starting in November, and has been running at a high level for years. Dr. Jeff Ratushny is from CB but works as an Internal Medicine specialist in Bridgewater, and was doing his first marathon. Congrats to both, and to all our other race winners and participants. |
