As many of you already know, John MacKinnon is the next Barbarian to take on his first Ironman. Next Sunday, about 6 hours before many of us hit the water in St Andrews, John will take the full IM plunge in Frankfurt Germany.
I thought it would be fun to start a new Barbarian tradition. Entry is 5$. Email me with your predicted time for John (hours, minutes, seconds). I will keep track of guesses (but not release them to John). The winner who is the closest to guessing his time (either over or under is fine, just closest) gets the pot of money donated to a charity of his/her choice. Sound fun? Get in touch before Saturday with your guess. You can see a report of John's 1/2 Ironman experience on the CBtriathlon blog to help educate your guess.

Thanks to Dan Murray and the crew for putting on another very successful Ingonish Tri. This is the first of two great triathlons here in CB, the second being Port Hood. Congrats to everyone. Check out the cbtriathlon blog post under "triathlon" above. Please email me if you have a race report, comments, photos, etc. Pictured here are three of our triathletes who are training for 1/2 IM St. Andrews, which is (ack) 2 weeks from today! Karen, Christine, and Colette all successfully completed the Olympic, despite some adversity. Click HERE or link to the CBtriathlon blog above to read the report on the Johnny Miles Race Weekend As many of you know, the CB Fiddler's Run Learn-to-Run program has been incredibly successful over the last few years. Erin Pyke Forsey and myself were asked to be on CBC's Maritime Noon phone-in show fielding questions about running today. Erin has a great voice. I have a great face for radio. It's great to see the success of the program on the map here in the Maritimes - a testament to all the hard work by Erin, Dave Gabriel, and the many other coaches and volunteers who put on this course every year. And I have to say that Erin looked very natural behind the microphone! Local triathlete, doctor, and medical officer of health Monika Dutt is getting her son Kail used to the bike early in life. Just imagine when his legs are long enough that his feet can reach the pedals? Kail is already a veteran of many running races, beating his mom to the line each time while in the stroller. Mayor Cecil Clark cuts the ribbon to officially open the new bike lane (wide paved shoulder) on Spar Road.
Getting to the Mayflower Mall/Big Box area by bicycle has been a major problem for cyclists trying to negotiate Welton St. The Spar Road bike lanes provide a great option to get there safely and securely. The design includes a deke off the road to take cyclists safely over the train tracks at a 90 degree angle. These oblique tracks had functioned as wheel-catchers, causing numerous cycling accidents over the last few years. Other great news was that the province will be including AT overpasses in the design of the new roundabout which will replace the mess of an intersection that currently exists at the conjunction of Spar Road, Grand Lake Road, and the 125 Bypass. Jacques Cote, who will be well known to the Barbarians, was the recipient of this year's Robert Baillie Award. This award is given yearly to someone who has made a special contribution to cardiovascular health in their community.
Dr. Baillie is an emeritus cardiologist who worked for many years here in Sydney. He himself is a very fit man, and an accomplished runner. (When I first started running in the mid-eighties he was one of the top runners in CBRR races) Jacques, along with his wife Micheline Guillot, has been the main driving force behind Velo Cape Breton since its inception back in 2004. VCB quickly grew to be the largest bicycle club east of Quebec, and a respected voice in promoting a culture of "cyclism" here in NS. Jacques has recently turned 70 but continues to be an active cyclist, and through his work continues to inspire a new generation of cyclists here in CB. You can join Jacques, Micheline, and I this Saturday at the CB Farmer's Market to have your bike checked (for free!) for the summer cycling season which is now upon us, and to find out more about rides and courses offered through VeloCB. Remember to visit www.velocapebreton.ca, which you can find under "bike" above It's been awesome to see the number of kids taking up running here in Cape Breton. I think we'll see great things from kids like the Bottomley girls, Gareth MacKinnon, Peter Googoo, Leah Morrison, and many others.
Parents - remember that there are a lot more opportunities for your kids to run than just the Big Race (DoctorsNS Fiddler's Kids Run). Check out the kids run schedule under the "schedules" tab above. And check out the race report from Bernadette MacLellan on the cbtriathlon blog, available under "triathlon" above. |
