Lots happening starting this Saturday. Don’t forget regular Tuesday runs continue, 6:50 PM from Kiwanis Pool. 5K and 11K options. Friday Run for the Beer at Breton Brewing, start time is flexible but finish around 6:30 to meet the group for beer. 1) Starting this Saturday there will be a run every Saturday morning from Dr. Luke’s, corner of Bentick and Prince St. Run start time 8:30. This Saturday is a special kick-off run to showcase and support the new Brooks Loop in Sydney’s south end. There will be a map at Dr. Luke’s at the start. The route will go up to the Baille And Trails, up the new branch trail to the Cossit Heights subdivision, to Rotary Drive, and back down the Greenlink Trails to Bentick St. and Dr. Luke’s to finish. To make a shorter run, you can drive to the trails. At the finish of the run there will be some coffee provided for runners, and if you want you can take out a membership to support the Baille Ard Trails (hey - how about a Baille Ard Trails membership as a great green stocking stuffer for that hard-to-buy-for person on your list?) 2) The annual Ugly Sweater run is this Sunday, Dec 17th at Governor’s Restaurant. This run is a fundraiser for Transition House. Bring an unwrapped toy or 20$ donation. Register starting 9AM, run start 10AM. 5K route. Ugliest sweater is the winner, this is not about speed. RSVP to wendymartin64@gmail.co if you want to stay for brunch afterwards. 3) Hark, did you hear!? There will be a new triathlon coming to our area Plan ahead by keeping the weekend of July 29th, 2018 open for the new Tri on the Mira, with plans for Olympic/Sprint/Tri-a-Tri + Junior events. Stay tuned and watch for the new facebook page. Watch for a learn-to-tri-swim course starting after Christmas. This is a fantastic chance to do a triathlon after sleeping comfortably in your own bed with your 3 cats (well OK, the cats part is just me, but…). It’s also a great opportunity for those of you who have been on the edge about doing a tri to make the commitment and git’er’dun. 4) No excuse for getting fat on the holidays! There is a Boxing Day 5K fun run, in support of the Northside General Hospital Foundation. 30$, 60$ for families. Register starting 10AM, ground floor main entrance of Northside General Hospital. First 100 registrants get a pair of commemorative Stanfield’s boxer shorts with registration. Advanced registration by credit card through the hospital foundation, 902-794-5402 5) The Resolution Run is on again this year! No excuses, it’s not until the afternoon and it’s not a race. 5 or 10K run options. Tea and coffee provided, pot luck (bring your New Year’s Eve and holiday party leftovers). Great way to kick off the season, or to kick off 100runs100days? http://www.slowtwitch.com/Lifestyle/100_runs_in_100_days_-_a_challenge__4088.html Meet in time for 1PM run start, Mira Rd. Firehall, 1757 George St. Great chance to sign up for CBRR for 2018 - make the commitment! 6) CB Roadrunners online signup is available at CBtrisports.com, on the right side of the page. New this year is a 50$ family membership (not available online - contact me in person) 7) The Crawling Crustacea master’s swimmers are well into another successful season. If you want to join, we have room for a few more people, so contact me if you’re interested. 8) don’t forget we have CBRR t-shirts for sale, great Xmas present for someone local who needs a little push to run, or for that Cape-Bretoner-at-Heart living away who loves to fly the colours. Contact me for details. As you can see, there’s lots going on despite the short dark days and rapidly winterizing weather. No excuses! See you out on the roads. -CM Hey folks - 30 brave runners at the Pursuit Run today. Memorable course. No PB's but some fantastic times!! Thanks so much to Peter Trask and The Lakes golf course/Ben Eoin Ski Hill for hosting this event. Thanks as well to Karen Campbell, Bernadette MacLellan, Lee Ann Astephen and others for all their work with the Kids Running Series this year. 39 kids completed enough runs to complete the series this year. They are the next CBRR generation, so it's great to see them out and given'r. Once again, Shaun Shea came out on top in the Pursuit Run with a convincing win. He runs like someone 20 years younger. 2nd was Justin Lalanne with Corey Deveaux making him nervous not far back. Rounding out the top 10 were: Caden Macleod Dean Abbass James Forsey Brodie Marshall Allan MacKenzie Noemi Godin Yvonne Jessome Well done everyone who ran!! We had runners from age 12 (Devon MacDonald) to 78 (George Bennett) and everything in between. There were some fantastic times. Full results are here: https://drive.google.com/…/fol…/0B_gv4dNN_uhXRzhzdmxmdWRmVzA Congrats as well to our age group winners, and our overall winners for the CB Roadrunners for 2017. Thanks to the race sponsors Harolds Bakery supplied the bread, rolls and sweets, no charge. Sobeys supplied the water and cutlery and plates, no charge. We are about to start another season of Crustiness. Looking forward to getting back in the pool with all y’all.
The Coast Guard pool is not on time with renos and it will be after Xmas before they open. So our schedule this year will start at Kiwanis. To begin, we’ll have the same schedule as last year: Monday evening 8-9 Tuesday evening 8-9:30 (that’s after running for those of you planning to do “Big Workout Tuesdays”) Thursday evening 8-9 Sunday morning 8-10 Fees for this year: Full year: 240 returning members, 265$ new members. (if paid separately or part year) Sept-Dec 110 returning members, 126 old new members. Jan-June 155 returning members, 175 new members There is no fee for CGC cadets. I’ll put in my little sales pitch - preaching to the converted for most of you, but you can forward this to your friend or spouse who is thinking about swimming but not sure. Swimming is a great lifelong sport (one of the few sports with a 100-and-over division at the world championships). It has a large fitness component but also a technique component. It’s a great upper body workout (are you listening cyclists and runners?). It’s mainly a winter sports (when our cycling and running is generally quieter). And lastly, it’s a great way to cross-train if you are prone to lower body aches or injuries when your run or cycle exclusively. Please email me back if you want in for this year. Please feel free to get in touch for more details if you need them. Please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. Looking forward to another year with a great bunch of people!! In celebration of our first night of swimming, we’ll do a beer night on Monday. A goggles and bathing suit order is going in, they will be for sale once they arrive. 5/4/2017 Emma Run this Sunday cancelled, but morphed into Baille Ard Fundraiser 5K - see details belowRead NowI just got word from Steve Van Nostrand that the Emma Run is at minimum postponed and potentially cancelled for this year. I took this as an opportunity since
--lots of you were all set to run Sunday --Jeris is on tap to time --there is a real need to raise funds for the Baille Ard SOO... On short notice, Sunday's race is changed to: Baille Ard Fundraiser 5K Sunday May 7th Register start 10AM, gun time 11AM Open Hearth Park Sydney Registration 15$ individual, 30$ family, all proceeds to the Baille Ard Nature Trail flood restoration registration link at: https://www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=99384&owner=1 (As per usual, register in advance and pay on race day. Advance registration helps make race morning registration run more smoothly) This is completely on trails and does not cross roads. Stroller-friendly, kid-friendly, walker friendly (although please remember to seed yourself properly at the start). The timing will continue for 1 hour. THIS IS A CBRR POINTS SERIES EVENT We will have CBRR registration available at the event. For those who register by Tuesday, they will receive points for all CBRR runs done thus far in the 2017 schedule. With great apologies to Dave Gabriel about being so late on this, I'm finally getting around to posting something VERY important.
"Most of you runners are by this time very familiar with the Baille Ard Trails in the Ashby area (if you don't know them by that name, they are the trails by the Washbrook just off Cottage Rd. near Sherwood Park Jr. High. You may also know that the trails suffered very extensive damage during the Thanksgiving flood last year. You may also not know that these trails are basically a one-man show. Dave Gabriel has conceived of, built, and maintained these trails (granted with some help) over many years, and created an amazing place for the community. Although we are blessed in CB to have some amazing hiking trails in other areas, having a trail right in town where you can see wildlife, get shade and peace, and even hear the call and see a great grey owl is pretty amazing. It is part of what has kept us in CB over the years despite many frustrations with the community. (the other thing that has kept us here is you folks - the awesome athletic community). The other thing that is important to know is that the Baille Ard is "special" in that it is not a provincial, federal, or municipally owned/maintained park. It is community-run, and manages grant-to-grant and through volunteer work. So the flood damage is that much harder to recover from, and here's where WE NEED YOU.First: PLEASE BUY A TICKET FOR A DRAW FOR A QUILT. This is a gorgeous, hand-made quilt from Elsie Buck. I WILL COME TO YOU if you want (if you are within a few Km of my house), or you can drop by my house and purchase one. Elsie has donated this quilt, so 100% of your money goes right to the Baille Ard Association to buy gravel and other supplies to fix the trails. Second: CONSIDER DOING A DIRECTED DONATION to NS Trails (or you can just buy a whole whack'o tickets with the same effect, and it will increase your chances of winning the quilt). (See below from Dave for details) Third: PLEASE COME TO THE MAY 13th EVENT which officially launches The Brooks Loop" (See separate post for details)Fourth: If you are able-bodied and willing to do some work at the trails, please email Dave directly through the Baille Ard contact email (see below) It's not often I ask for donations or financial support (in fact, I avoid this like the plague) but this is a unique problem that really requires community support to fix. Please help out. And please please please don't leave me with a huge bunch of unsold tickets! :-) The following is from Dave: Hi, Please act on and forward this to your contacts. The Baille Ard Recreation Association is experiencing one of its most exciting and challenging years. At the same time as our volunteers are repairing major damage to our existing trails, we are also extending our trails to Cossitt Heights, developing new activities for families, seniors and students, promoting linkages with Greenlinks and Wentworth Park using city streets, and working to create an active living trail on the banks of the Washbrook from Sherwood Park Education Centre to St. Peters Road. We need volunteer help and financial success to succeed. You can help financially by purchasing tickets on our draw (see attachment) and encouraging your friends and colleagues who understand the value of the Baille Ard Nature Trails to our community to do likewise. You might also consider donating to our association either directly (contact@bailleardnaturetrails.com) or through the Nova Scotia Trails website (http://www.novascotiatrails.com). David Thanks to Cindy Hynes, Calvin Pitcher, and crew who really know how to put on a great race.
Despite somewhat "nippy" temperatures and a wind chill to boot, there was a good turnout of 62 people for Saturday March 4th's annual Slush Run. No slush this year (it was all frozen) so the footing was good and there were some very good times, especially for this time of year. In the men's race Andreas Burger kept the heat on Justin Lalanne but couldn't match the pace. On the women's side, Caden MacLeod is in great shape, took over a minute off last year's time, and won handily over 2nd place Nicole Kennedy. Laura Doucette nipped Yvonne Jessome in the last Km to finish 3rd. Great job everyone! Time to start training for the Coast Guard College 8-miler, the next race on the CBRR schedule. For full race results, see the results section at the top of this page. And don't forget to register for CBRR 2017! Hey Beginners
We’re back at Kiwanis and ready to go with Beginners swimming. This is a good time of year to start if you want to get your swimming together for the summer, either for a triathlon or just enjoying the water. There will be two swims per week that you can attend. Tuesday evenings from 8:30-9:30, and Sunday mornings from 8-9AM. You can attend one or both. Cost is 50$. First session will be this Sunday, and the last session will be April 23rd. It should be fun! We’ve had lots of people over the last few years graduate from beginner status into our regular group and do very well. Let me know if you’re interested, as we have a max of 10 people. Please pay in advance or at the first session. Looking forward to it. Thanks to Dave Dalgliesh and all the cadets who worked to bring us Pumpkin Run 2016. Although the day started damp and cool, the precipitation tapered off and by race time we had very reasonable conditions for both running and spectating. There were solid turnouts for both the kid and adult races. Justin Lalanne continued his winning ways with an uncontested victory. Mary Luco, a 1st year CGC cadet, proved that she will be a factor on the CB running scene while she's here, placing 4th overall and 1st female. Kendall McNeil, another 1st year Cadet (homegrown - from Westmount) not only had a great run placing 3rd, but perhaps the best costume as Forrest Gump (see below) Thanks to all who put the race on, and we hope to see it back again next year. Don't forget this Saturday's Pursuit Run and CBRR end-of-year banquet. Free for all paid CBRR members. This year it is moved to Bethel Church hall, on Brookland St. just off of George. Hi Athletes Some quick updates on a few upcoming and recently past events. 1) The annual House Crawl is this Saturday, November 5th. Details are posted on the CB Barbarians FB page, or contact me directly for details. Should be fun! Remember Barbarian of the Year is announced at the end of the night. This is perhaps the best party of the year here in Cape Breton. “Better than Christmas” is our slogan. 2) Run the Lakes, originally scheduled for Nov 6th, has been cancelled due to flood damage at The Lakes golf course. Watch for this race to return next year. 3) The annual Pursuit Run and CBRR end-of-year banquet is on Nov 12th, Saturday. The run will be at the usual location on Cromarty St. The banquet will be at a new location due to the demise of the South End Community Centre. Watch your email, twitter, and cbtrisports.com for details. Don’t forget, the Pursuit Run is a very interesting format where head starts are given by age and sex, and whoever crosses the line first is the best age group runner of 2016. It’s different and lots of fun. Hope you can make it. 4) Beginners swimming will be starting next week. Details will be going out soon. We have one spot left, so let me know if you’re interested. 5) Congrats to everyone who ran last weekend’s Pumpkin Run, and congratulations to Justin Lalanne and Mary Luco - this year’s winners. A huge thanks to Dave Dalgliesh and his merry band of cadets for putting on this fun event. Great turnout for both adults and kids. 6) Congrats to our very own Chrissy Smith (pictured above) who was 12th place with a spectacularly fast run at last weekend’s AUAA Cross Country championship race. Chrissy is in year 2 running for Acadia, and is obviously doing some serious training. Her result qualifies her for the national championship. We’re proud of her! 7) Don’t forget the weekly track run is changed to a tempo run for the winter, for now starting at our place at 15 Howe Court. 6K and 9K options currently. And the Friday evening Breton Brewing run continues, start time flexible but end time 6:30 back at Breton Brewing on Keltic Drive. Hope to see you soon!
